History

Modesto Junior College has been providing life changing opportunities to the Central Valley since 1921.

Modesto Junior College is one of the oldest community colleges in the state, established in 1921, and holds the distinction of having erected the first junior college classroom in the state.  Since its inception, MJC has played an important role in offering its student quality higher education, and also serving as a cultural center in the community.  From a charter enrollment of 61 students, the institution has grown to a student body of more than 18,000.  MJC has a diverse population of students, representing an exciting blend of many different cultures in an atmosphere that celebrates diversity, values cultural variety and encourages both creative and critical thinking.

To complement enrollment growth, the college provides two campus sites in Modesto:  the original East Campus on College Avenue and the West Campus, a 120-acre site on Blue Gum Avenue.  The college also offers off-campus classes at a number of community locations around Stanislaus County.

MJC has built an outstanding reputation for educational excellence in our community at a fraction of the cost and without sacrificing educational quality.  Students can take classes to upgrade their job skills, prepare for transfer to a four-year university or achieve an associate degree in over 50 a
